    Job Description:
    Advising:
    • Conduct prehealth advising appointments through in person, phone, video, walk in appointments.
    • Assist students and alumni/ae interested in exploring careers in medicine and/or health professions.
    • Advise students in preparing for the medical and health profession school application process by assisting them in gaining relevant experience, finding volunteer and shadowing opportunities, securing recommendations, etc.
    • Provide application education by staying up to date on academic requirements and course selection, required exams, letters of recommendation, application timeline, school selection, etc.
    • Conduct essay critiques and mock interviews for the medical school application process and committee process (i.e. COPA).

    Event and Programming Coordination:
    • Coordinate the shadow program(s) which includes organizing opportunities for prehealth students to shadow surgeons and medical fields.
    • Facilitate a diverse array of programming to assist students in exploring medicine, preparing for the application process, and applying to medical school. This includes workshops, panels, school visits, and special events. 
    • Serve as the liaison with relevant student groups (e.g. MAPS, MPS) and relevant campus offices (e.g. PKG, Office of the 1st Year) regarding the promotion of events, opportunities, and resources, and development of joint programming.

    Early Student Intervention and Programming:
    • Coordinate the Discover Prehealth Freshman Pre-Orientation Program (FPOP) which includes managing the programs budget, hiring and training the program’s Peer Counselors, and organizing a multi-day program for a group of incoming freshmen interested in exploring medical careers and learn about the prehealth resources and opportunities available at MIT.
    • Lead, coordinate, and recruit prehealth peer mentors and host events for the prehealth peer mentoring program.
    Additional Projects/Responsibilities
    • Provide support and assistance for large scale projects as needed.
    • Contribute to the production of publications and social media outreach including newsletters, facebook posts, tip guides, and the president’s report.
    • Assist in the assessment of the overall Prehealth Advising Program through administering and/or compiling survey results.
    • Serve as a liaison with health profession schools and application services (AMCAS) for the purpose of educating the prehealth community and advocating for applicants as needed.

    Supervision Received: The Prehealth Advisor will report to the Assistant Director for Prehealth Advising

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Bachelor’s degree combined with minimum of two years of experience (emphasis in academic advising, career counseling, student affairs or related field) required, Master’s preferred. One or more years of experience in a career center or higher education setting, related to career development or academic advising. Experience with health profession advising highly desirable.
