Job Description: Advise and coach UT Austin pre-health professions students regarding academic prerequisites and non-academic components in their preparation for application to professional school. Fully incorporate Health Professions Office (HPO) and College of Natural Sciences (CNS) values into and all aspects of the position, especially student-centeredness, diversity, equity and inclusion.
Responsibilities:
Student Advising/Coaching: Provide advising individually and in groups to pre-health professions students as they progress toward and complete application to professional schools. Develop, select, and utilize effective pre-Health Professions materials for students pursuing a health professions career. Collect and utilize admissions data from Health Professions Schools. Manage the collection and dissemination of information about professional schools to students.
Program Development: Develop and implement resources and services for students interested in pursuing careers in allied health, such as podiatry, chiropractic medicine, healthcare administration, orthotics and prosthetic, respiratory therapist etc.
Communication & Outreach: Serve as HPO liaison to pre-health professions student organizations providing relevant information and encouraging student use of the HPO. Develop and present workshops for students. Teach and present to groups ranging in size from 25 to over 400. Work with New Student Services on materials and activities related to orientation. Act as liaison to academic advisors and faculty across campus regarding pre-health professions requirements. Train academic advisors in academic advising for pre-health professions students. Represent office at UT ACA meetings. Represent the Health Professions Office in on-campus and off-campus meetings and at conferences.
Learning Ability & Versatility: Stay current on admissions requirements at professional schools, both in and out-of-state across these disciplines: Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary, Pharmacy, Optometry, Physician Assistant, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy.
Problem Solving/Results Orientation: Maintain academic advising aids and serve as liaison to professional schools regarding pre-requisite coursework. Work with Texas Institute for Discovery Education in Science (TIDES) data team and Sr. Student Program Manager on matriculation and acceptance data.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, or related field. Two years of experience in academic advising, career services, pre-health professions advising or other related area. Knowledge of, or experience with high achieving student populations. Demonstrated passion for encouraging, and inspiring a diverse population of students. Comfortable presenting to large groups. Demonstrated ability to explain detailed and complex information. Proven record of accomplishment demonstrating effective prioritization and management of assigned projects. Self-motivated. Ability to maintain composure in high-pressure situations. Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative and inclusive team environment. Ability to communicate professionally with internal and external constituents including but not limited to; students, staff, faculty, and partners at the professional schools. Demonstrated knowledge of and proficiency in a variety of current and emerging technology platforms. Must be able to occasionally travel, including overnight travel. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling, psychology, or related field, completed by start date. More than the required experience listed above. Experience in a university environment or experience working as a health professions advisor. Experience working with key stakeholders at health professions professional schools. Experience initiating new programs/projects and assessing the effectiveness of these activities in meeting intended objectives. Demonstrated ability guiding and facilitating the decision-making process. Demonstrated understanding of student development and awareness of the challenges students face as they enter and progress through higher education, particularly those pursuing health profession careers. Experience coordinating and communicating with campus organizations and departments. Capable of researching and developing content, creating interactive exercises, and applying effective teaching methods for credit-bearing courses.
